A Whimsical Spring Wedding

FOXFIRE MOUNTAIN HOUSE

After getting engaged at the nearby Kaaterskill Falls, Steph and Bill knew they wanted to host their wedding in the Catskills. When they stumbled upon Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper, they knew it was the place for them and their guests.

With people coming from around the world, the couple put in a lot of effort to pay homage to their different cultures. Their menu infused Korean-American dishes, the florals and decor were very colorful, and they incorporated elements from their traditional ceremony in Korea.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the couple had to reschedule from their original date in May 2020 and replan the wedding for May 2021. With half the original guest list, they were able to select down to their most important and most loved people. With everybody on-site in the Catskills for the weekend, it led to the most incredible party!

how to find your dream wedding photographer

Foxfire Mountain House is full of character - weathered wood, layered textiles, antique details, and a layout that feels both intimate and a little eclectic. Set in the Catskills with mountain views, gardens, and a reflecting pond, it’s a photographer’s dream, but it does require someone who knows how to work with its unique lighting and layout.

Natural light changes quickly here. The property is surrounded by tall trees, which means ceremony light can shift from bright to shaded in an instant. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony on the lawn, aim for late afternoon when the sun dips behind the house - it’s the most flattering time for portraits. Earlier in the day, the dappled light can be tricky, so make sure your photographer knows how to handle mixed lighting without making things look too contrasty or blown out.

Inside the inn, most rooms have moody, lower light. That’s part of the charm, but it does mean your photographer should be experienced with indoor shooting and know how to use flash sparingly to maintain the atmosphere. The dining room, in particular, is beautiful but dark - string lights and candles help, but your photographer should be ready for the challenge.

Foxfire isn’t a traditional ballroom-style venue - it has quirks, nooks, and movement throughout the day. The best photographers for this space are those who can anticipate moments, adapt quickly to different lighting conditions, and understand how to work within tighter spaces without disrupting the flow of the event.
